Our next stop was going to be Austin, for some DDD food, the Johnson Library and Museum and a visit to the Zilker Botanical Gardens where all of us could go for a walk.
Alas,’ the best laid plans’ rarely go as planned. The day before our planned visit to learn about LBJ, I went onto the web site to double check the hours and directions, and found out that the major exhibits were closed due to renovations. In the words of a great Canadian Prime Minister, ‘fuddle duddle’. Maybe next time and in addition, set aside some time to go to the LBJ Ranch in Hill Country.
By this time, we were used to the Texas access road system of having to drive 5 miles east then west to get 500 yds west or your original starting point, so getting around was easier. The Austin Lone Star RV Resort is located right on I35, but you have to be careful as the entrance to the park is about 20 yds from the junction of the exit ramp and the access road; you have to merge with high speed traffic, quickly cross 2 lanes of traffic and then slow down enough to make the turn, all within about 20 yards. After the first time, I always exited a ramp early. One of the major attractions of this RV park was that it had a fenced in dog area for Robbie and Abby and also close to a DDD BBQ place, Green Mesquite, just down the road a couple of exits. This location was in a strip mall while the original is downtown near the Zilker Gardens. I was also hoping that we would be able to make it to the Magnolia Cafe downtown, but it was not to be.
This is a new location, not nearly as picturesque as the original location near the gardens, but the food was exceptional. I of course, had the ribs
The Magnolia Cafe was another DDD site that was on my list, really close to the LBJ Museum, so this one will have to wait as well, open 24/8 (no, that is not a typo).
This was a wonderful experience, with many sections to the gardens with different themes, from dragons, to dinosaurs, to pioneer era buildings, a Japanese Water Garden and more. Robbie and Abby were welcome, as long as they were on their leash.
The garden is located at 2220 Barton Springs Rd, just down the road from the Green Mesquite BBQ.
