Trip Map 2012 Texas to IllinoisSpringfield Illinois

There is so much to see in Springfield that is related to Honest Abe, it is a shame that we did not get a chance to see it all, the museum, library, tomb, home, memorial gardens. We may be able to rectify that if we go through Springfield on our way back to Junction City in August.

IMG_0266We found a great campground just south of Springfield, the Double J Campground and RV, in Chatham IL. The address is 9683 Palm Road which happens to be the original ‘Route 66’ coming south from Chicago.

There is lots of parking around The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum however rather than test the roof heights of the parking buildings, we parked on the street. The Library & Museum are located at 212 North Sixth Street. Across the street from the museum is the new Union Station Visitor Center which has lots of information for both Springfield and Illinois.

IMG_1258IMG_0200There was also another destination planned for Springfield. Lynn is very picky when it comes to choosing restaurants. They have to look ‘good’ from the outside. I knew that we would face some interesting reactions when coming to some of these DDD restaurants, and Charlie Parker’s (700 North St.)was going to be a prime example. From the outside, in looks like a real dump, an old WWII era quonset hut, but on the inside, it is pure diner. According to Lynn, it was some of the best fried chicken she ever ate (just don’t tell her son Stephen about that, as he is a Vegan).

On our second trip to Charlies, Lynn had a more traditional BLT while I had a ‘Horseshoe’, a Springfield IL original.

IMG_0262We were in need of a trip to ‘the store that shall not be named’, a new store on a street that wasn’t even in my GPS, just about 5 minutes from the campground. to our surprise, good old Abe left his mark here to, the building has an exterior mimicking that of the Museum. It was really quite a surprise although the inside was the same old same old.
The top of the arch has one of old Abe's famous quotes: “People are just as happy as they make their minds to be”.
