The main theme of this years excursion was to drive to Ontario Canada and visit our new granddaughter for her 1st birthday party and ,shudder, my 60th. A number of routes and destinations were under discussion.

  • We were going to try to visit a number of Presidential Museums along the way. The government web site ‘Visit Presidential Libraries and Museums’ gave us all the information we needed (well mostly). It didn’t tell us that the Lyndon B Johnson Museum was under renovation and that most of the exhibits were closed, which we found out when we got to Austin. Also for some reason, the Lincoln Museum was not on the list, but I found information about that at another website.
  • There was also going to be an Escapee’s Rally in Sedalia MO in September that we wanted to experience.
  • Lynn wanted to try a zip line adventure and she found a suitable tour in Ohio
  • We also wanted to start visiting Triple D sites along the way
  • possible stops in Memphis and Nashville TN
  • Escapee Care Center in Livingston TX to volunteer for the month of October
  • When to visit Junction City for some work on the RV, on the way North or on the way South or both
  • The people at Utility Bodywerks had said that if we were driving through Indiana any time soon, to stop by so that they could give the air ride system on the truck a check up

Presidential Museums on Route

Johnson Library and Museum

Austin Texas is a 2 day ride from Mission and if we stopped at San Antonio, a very short drive north from there.

2313 Red River Street
Austin, TX 78705-5702

Eisenhower Museum and Library

Abilene Kansas is a short drive from Junction City, so whenever we were visiting New Horizons next, we would make the museum a day trip. We had already been to Abilene while we were picking up the rig last September, on a day trip to the Greyhound Hall of Fame and noticed the presidential museum across the street.

200 SE 4th Street
Abilene, KS 67410-2900

You could almost draw a straight line from Independence Missouri to Springfield Illinois to Elkhart Indiana to Ontario Canada, with a slight deviation to Grand Rapids Michigan, so libraries seemed to fall into place. If we went to New Horizons on the north bound side of our trip, we could visit these libraries on the way from Junction City to Canada. On the flip side, if we went to New Horizons after Canada, then we could stop by on the way from Canada to New Horizons.

Truman Library and Museum

Independence Missouri is just east of Kansas City and a days ride from Junction City.

500 West U.S. Highway 24
Independence, MO 64050-1798

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum

Springfield Illinois is on a line north east between Independence and the Canadian border of Ontario.

212 North Sixth Street
Springfield, IL 62701

Gerald R. Ford Museum

Grand Rapids is exactly due north of Elkhart/Goshen Indiana, which is from there, a run due east to Port Huron Michigan, the gateway to Sarnia Ontario and beyond.

303 Pearl Street NW
Grand Rapids, MI 49504-5353

George H. W. Bush Library

College Station is a short drive from Livingston Texas where we knew we would be staying the month of October, after the Escapee Sedalia Rally. It is also on the way from Livingston to Mission via Schulenburg, which we had stayed at last November and has some lovely bakeries and meat shops.

1000 George Bush Drive West
College Station, TX 77845

DDD or Triple D

a.k.a. Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives: A show on Food Network where the host, Guy Fieri, visits obscure places around the country that have exceptional food. They are for the most part, the kind of establishment, that if Lynn was looking at it from the outside, she would say ‘Not on your life’. You can read more about our DDD sojourn here.
